Ms SONIA HORNERY (Wallsend) (13:19): My question is addressed to the Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading. Will the Minister inform the House of how the Minns Labor Government is protecting consumers by cracking down on fuel retailers who do not meet their FuelCheck obligations?
Mr ANOULACK CHANTHIVONG (Macquarie Fields—Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Minister for Industry and Trade, Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, Minister for Building, and Minister for Corrections) (13:19): I thank the member for Wallsend for her question. I know she is working very hard to make sure that every motorist across New South Wales is getting the best price when they are filling up at their local servo. Global events have impacted on petrol prices across the world, and we are not immune to that. That is why the Minns Labor Government is looking for practical solutions that help motorists across the State. We have introduced new legislation to crack down on service stations to ensure that they are playing by the rules for motorists across the State. At its core, FuelCheck is about putting real-time information in the hands of motorists across the 2,400 servos in the State to ensure that wherever motorists are, they get the best price they can. On top of that, it is also about compliance, making sure that inspectors are out there and servos are doing the right thing. If they are not doing the right thing, they will be caught and fined.
Mr Anthony Roberts: Point of order: All questions should be directed through the Speaker.
The SPEAKER: I uphold the point of order. The Minister has the call.
Mr ANOULACK CHANTHIVONG: No matter where you are, our inspectors will be out there—
Mr Anthony Roberts: Point of order—
The SPEAKER: The member for Lane Cove will resume his seat or leave the Chamber.
Mr ANOULACK CHANTHIVONG: Our proposed laws will create new offences and also include new penalties for servos that fail to report accurate fuel prices and availability. On-the-spot fines will double for individual servos and triple for companies, and re-offending within 12 months of an offence will result in five times the fine—up to $5,500. That is a clear message for all service stations to do the right thing.
